CAPTION: St. Simons Island is one ofthe largest of Georgia’s famous “Golden Isles”. Guale Indians called the Island Asao. Spain established the first mission on St. Simons in 1568, and priest of the Jesuit Order, serving this mission, called it San Simon. The anglicized version of the name of the old mission is the name the Island bears today.
